Background information
Indian River
Named after the Kalinago Indians who inhabited the river banks, Indian River is the largest of Dominica’s many rivers. From above, you can see this still beauty winding between the villlages of Glanvillia and Portsmouth, down to the sea. The river’s shoreline is populated by buttressed Bwa Mang Trees whose roots clutch away at the bank.
The wet mangrove is home to a myriad of wildlife – crabs, egrets, and many other birds which grace the land.A soothing boat ride by experienced locals is the best way to traverse the river, and any visit should involve a stop at Cobra’s beach bar for a stab at the bar’s special ‘dynamite’ rum punch.
Indian River is famous for its scene in Pirates of the Caribbean, where the Calypso Voodoo house was built and still stands today. This eerie, whimsical structure, preceded by a shaky wooden staircase creeping up from the river is a site to behold. An Indian River Tour is a great way to experience Dominica, while being transported by stories of legend and past, on a soothing journey through the coastal forest of the island.
Chaudiere Pool
Chaudiere is a beautiful, natural pool carved out of grey rock, fed by a calmly cascading downpour from the river above. This refreshing swimming hole emanates from the Hampstead River in the picturesque community of Bense. The pool is the perfect way to escape from the surrounding heat and be embraced by nature. Thick forest hovers above and fresh river millets can be seen jumping up the tumbling waterfall. Jump in from cliffside and be caressed by calm river torrents in yet another one of Dominica’s fresh water wonders.
Red Rocks
Shaped by ocean and rugged Caribbean weather is the unique formation of reddish, clay earth known as Red Rocks. This uncommon rock formation lies on the north eastern coast in Calibishie, Dominica and is indeed visually orgasmic. During sunrise and set, the rocks seem to glow beneath the sun’s rays, as white waves tumble violently along their edge. At dusk, the sun descends behind the mountains, shedding a soft backlight for the rocks, which blaze red beneath its glow.
Not only are the rocks a site to behold, but a great place for quick exploration. Short rocky trails lead to hidden rock formations, a cozy cave and an intimate black sand beach. Red Rock is just another of the many unique natural phenomena that defines the magic that is Dominica and is a definite must-see for anyone wishing to explore the northern end of the island.
